For enhanced security, MarginEdge uses what's known as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA). This log in method provides a second layer of security so that in addition to a correct password, we will also need a 6 digit code for logging in to [me]. This article covers how you can set up MFA for your own personal account.
You may occasionally encounter this if perhaps you get a new computer, use a new browser or device to login, or travel to an unusual location. In this scenario, a code will be emailed to you.
You also have the option to enable this feature yourself so that is in effect in order to help protect your account. If you choose this path, you may receive the code via text message or through an authenticator app installed on your phone.
Setting up MFA
If you would like to add additional protection to your account (especially great for someone with access to Bill Pay or other sensitive financial data), you may enable MFA from within your user profile settings.
1) Click on your name in the upper right hand corner and choose "Settings".
2) Choose the "Security" tab from the top list of options and click to "Enable" Multi-Factor Authentication.
3) Confirm that you are prepared to "Log out now" and proceed to complete the set up. If you choose to "Finish later" then next time you log in you will be forced to set up MFA.
4) At the login screen, use your current password to complete the login. You will then be asked to choose which MFA method you want to use.
Choosing Authenticator App or SMS Text Messages
There are two choices for how to receive your 6-digit code:
- Installing and opening an "authenticator app" on your cell phone
- Providing a cell phone number to receive an SMS text message
How does an authenticator app work? There are a variety of authenticator apps available and typically you only need to install one for a multitude of logins. Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator are two popular options. Once installed and configured, this app will offer a fresh code every 30 seconds that will allow you to login. This is the most secure option.
Will you use my cell phone number to contact me? No, this process only uses the number you provide for automated messages to send you the 6-digit code. It is not stored or used for any marketing purposes.
[1] Installing and Configuring the Authenticator App
1) From within your mobile app, download your choice of Authenticator App.
If you need help choosing, we recommend the Google Authenticator.
2) Open the app and click the "plus" icon to add a new login. It will open up the camera to scan a QR code.
3) Once scanned, it will add "MarginEdge" along with your username to your list of logins. Directly below that you will find your 6-digit code.
Enter this into your login screen and click "Continue"
[2] Using SMS Text Messages for Verification
1) Once you select "SMS", you will be prompted to enter your mobile number.
2) When you receive your text message, copy and paste that number into login screen.
Enter this into your login screen and click "Continue". Note that if you didn't receive the code or waited too long and it expired, you can click to "Resend" and try again.
Final Important Step! Your MFA Recovery Code
On the final setup screen you will be provided with a long recovery code. Please copy and save this in a safe place. You will need this if you get locked out or if you lose your cell phone. (Perhaps write it down and store it in your desk drawer. Or, even better, in your fireproof safe.)
Once completed, click "I have safely recorded this code" and click "Continue"!
Great job! Now you are all set up!
