MarginEdge offers a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets you connect AI assistants, like Claude and ChatGPT directly to your MarginEdge account. Once connected, you can ask natural-language questions about your restaurant's purchasing, vendors, products, recipes, inventory, and financial performance, and get answers pulled live from your real data.

What data can my AI tool access?
When you connect the MarginEdge MCP server to an AI tool, it can access certain data based on the available data endpoints. Your AI platform will only ever see the data within MarginEdge that you're authorized to access.
Access is currently read-only. AI tools can look up and analyze your data, but they cannot create, edit, or delete anything in MarginEdge.
The MarginEdge MCP server currently offers 30 tools: the 26 data tools listed below, plus 4 helper tools your AI app uses behind the scenes (see "Helper tools" at the end of this article). We add tools over time, so your AI app may show a slightly different count.
Some AI apps display these names with spaces instead of underscores (for example, "Get new item review").

Helper tools
These tools don't return restaurant data. Your AI app uses them to find the right data tool, or to identify your account while you connect.
| Tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| help_directory | Lists every tool the MarginEdge MCP server offers, with a one-line summary of each. |
| help_tool | Returns the details for one tool, such as what it returns and whether its results come in pages. |
| help_search | Suggests which tools fit a plain-language request, such as "find orders for a vendor." |
| get_profile | Identifies which MarginEdge account is signed in, so your AI app (mainly ChatGPT) can link to it while you connect. It returns no restaurant data. |
