What Changed and What You Need to Know
MarginEdge has improved how we handle Product Mix (PMIX) data from Toast. These changes are designed to make PMIX mapping easier and faster. Here’s a quick overview of what’s changed and how it impacts you.
🔧 What's New with the PMIX Enhancements
1. You Can Rename Items Without Breaking Mappings
Before: If you changed a button name in Toast, MarginEdge treated it as a brand new item—so you had to re-map it.
Now: If you rename a Toast button, the existing mapping in MarginEdge stays intact.
Heads up: Don’t reuse buttons for new items. Always create a new one in Toast, or historical data and mappings might get messy.
2. Modifiers Are Now Merged Into a Single Line
Before: A modifier like “Whipped Cream” showed up multiple times—once for every menu item it modified. You had to map each one.
Now: All instances of “Whipped Cream” are merged into one line. You map it once, and you're done.
Need different quantities for different items? Use the “Scale Override” field to adjust the amount per menu item.
3. Size Pricing is Smarter
Note: Size Pricing is not turned on by default for all customers. If you connected Toast before May 2024, then please reach out to help@marginedge.com to have this feature turned on.
Before: Size options (like small, medium, large, 12oz, pint) were treated just like other modifiers. This made it hard to know which size was selected when mapping other modifiers for the item.
Now: If you’re using Size Pricing in Toast, then the size is included in the item name, making it easier to map the correct scale for modifiers.
For example, if a drink comes in multiple sizes and includes different add-ons (like a milk selection), you’ll now be able to tell which size was ordered when you go to map the scale for the milk selection.
⚠️ If Size Pricing is turned on, you’ll need to remap any items in Toast that use size options. This is because each size will now appear as its own line item, making it easier to map accurately—but requiring new mappings.
❓ FAQ
Do I need to remap everything?
You shouldn't have to! Your existing mappings will carry over unless:
-
You reused a Toast button for a completely different menu item (which is not recommended), or
-
You choose to enable Size Pricing.
⚠️ If Size Pricing is turned on, you’ll need to remap any items in Toast that use size options. This is because each size will now appear as its own line item, making it easier to map accurately—but requiring new mappings.
My menu item has a size in its name and in the modifiers—what do I map?
Map the version that includes the size in the item name. This ensures you're mapping to the correct item.
Will my Theoretical Usage report change?
Not unless your mappings were previously incomplete or inaccurate. These enhancements are designed to improve mapping clarity, which should lead to more accurate reporting overall.
🔍 If you enable Size Pricing, you may notice changes in your Theoretical Usage report for size-based items, since sizes will now be tracked separately and require new mappings.
⚠️ Important: If a modifier is mapped, but the menu item it modifies is not, MarginEdge will attribute the entire revenue for that sale to the mapped modifier. To ensure accurate usage and cost reporting, make sure both the menu item and its modifiers are mapped.
🛠 Troubleshooting Tips
The amount of the modifier changes depending what it's modifying – how do I account for that?
You can still account for different quantities per menu item by using the Scale Override feature:
-
Use Scale Override when a modifier (like oat milk or extra cheese) is used in different amounts depending on the item it's modifying.
-
Set a default scale for the modifier, then adjust the quantity for specific menu items using the Scale Override column.
For example: If “Oat Milk” usually uses 1 oz, but for a “Large Flat White” it uses 6 oz, set 1 as the default and 6 as the override for that item.
I don’t see the “Minor” under modifiers anymore.
That's expected. Modifiers are now grouped together to reduce clutter. Click into a modifier to see which menu items it applies to—and use “Scale Override” as needed.
I can’t map a modifier to multiple recipes/products anymore.
This is by design. Each modifier is now only mapped once. To adjust quantities per item, use “Scale Override” (seen once you click into a modifier).
I see multiple modifiers with the same name—why?
You likely have multiple buttons in Toast with the same name. Only modifiers with the same Toast button ID are merged. You'll need to map each line if multiple buttons were created in Toast with the same name.
What happened to my previous scales?
They’re preserved! Any custom scales you set will now appear in the “Scale Override” column when you click into a modifier.
🎯 Final Tip
If something looks off, click into the modifier or menu item—most of the detail lives just one level deeper.
